Marc Jacobs
We've just moved out of 90 degree temperatures and, true to form, this year's New York Fashion Week is already looking ahead to Spring of next year. Monday's Marc Jacobs show over at the Lincoln Center (where the majority of the shows are being held this year, instead of the tents of Bryant Park)was a ritzy, glitzy affair of 70's disco chic, complete with big hair, gold lame, and Missoni-esque prints.
And although baggier shapes are prevalent this season, Jacobs' line featured more sheer and body-conscious efforts with an easy, relaxed fit. Full skirts were juxtaposed with body-skimming jumpers and hot pants, and wide-brimmed floppy sunhats and oversized glasses also added to the retro feel. And a couple of full, flowy dresses in bright colors, another prevalent theme, are gypsy chic at it's finest.
There were some crystal clear nods to Jody Foster's infamous child prostitute, Iris, from 1976's iconic Taxi Driver. An unlikely fashion icon (but one you know I love), Jacobs makes it work by pairing bare, gamine legs with covered torsos. Long sleeves, tailored jackets, and babydoll cuts with hotpants are the perfect mix of sweet, subtle, and sexy.
