A million dollars won't get you much these days, but in 1967, Thurston B. Howell, III, the millionaire, and his wife, Eunice "Lovey" Wentworth Howell, were living so large they took tens of thousands of dollars in cash and at least five suitcases worth of clothes with them on the three-hour S. S. Minnow boat tour.
Thurston, played by Jim Backus, grew up in Long Island, attended Harvard, and owned at least six businesses when he became a castaway. He also refused to do any menial labor on the island and hilariously tried to use his money to influence the others- such as when he created a 'Members Only' country club that was promptly crashed by Mary-Anne.
A die-hard prep, he was known for wearing ascots, a blue blazer, and various hats in each episode. (As they say in the soon to be released True Prep: 'No matter your age, gender, or sexual orientation, to be preppy you must own a blue blazer. This is non-negotiable.')
Lovey, played by Natalie Schafer, came from a wealthy family and spoke fluent French and Italian. A kind-hearted Blue Blood, she served as a surrogate mother for the younger members of the crew- and as such, was never seen without a pair of gloves or a full set of pearls. Hats, floral dresses, and prim sweater sets were also in constant rotation. Jungle heat, pish tosh!
I swear I cannot get ENOUGH of these two... this is totally how I'm going to dress when I'm old and batty.
