Thursday Style Icon: Gilligan

Main character Willy Gilligan, played by Bob Denver, was first mate on the S. S. Minnow, and the inadvertent cause of it's wreck when he threw the untethered anchor overboard. Accident-prone, Gilligan is the cause of most of the groups failures in their attempts to get off of the island.

Gilligan, along with the Skipper, is one of the only characters to remain in the same clothes for the entire show; due to their being crew, they of course didn't bring any luggage with them on the trip.

Gilligan has become a pop culture icon due to the success of the series, along with his trademark red shirt, pale trousers and white navy cap. This classic nautical style was right on trend for this summer, as well as practical for a life at sea- where long sleeves and pants in lightweight material protect the skin from sand and sun.

The use of a bright solid on top and a pale blue pant is a fun summer look, but probably should be left in the closet after Labor Day. Instead, opt for navy blue bottoms with the colorful top for fall, and make sure you keep the contrasting collar and white cap for that 'I'm-on-a-boat!' flair.
