Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Boot?

Nelson Lace-Up Peep Toe Booties

Peep-toe. Lace-Up. Booties. Sounds insane, right? But, I don't know, I'm digging these... while this look has been around for a while, it only recently got on my radar. Rihanna and Solange both wore their own versions waaayy back in summer of 2009, but I was never really feeling the whole 'clunky-boot-with-a-light-dress' thing.

I liked Solange's take a little better as it was more formal, and because she had on a Chanel boot... and you can just never go wrong with Chanel. Ever. (And, by the way, there has never been a better make-over than Solange getting rid of that weave. Her face looks about a million times better with the short cut.) But I still felt that these dressy looks didn't quite do justice to the grunge nature of the peep-toe bootie. I mean, it defies nature! It's a boot, meant for cold weather, with open toes, meant for warm weather! It doesn't WANT to be worn with a gentle floral dress! So we cue the mid-calf legging. When paired with a fluffy, tiered skirt and a tough leather jacket, this look is BAD. While the closed-toe booties and leopard-print leggings I've used in this collage, stolen from www.flyjane.net, illustrate the trend, they don't really give the feel that I'm looking for. Your end result should be something more like this:

Tough and tight on top, big and pretty on the bottom. Total opposites, just like the big, bad open-toed boot.
