In The Minajerie
I'm not the hugest Nicki Minaj fan, but much props go to her for this spread and her cover on Elle's May 2011 issue, dubbed 'The Music Issue.' No other female rapper has garnished as many accolades in fashion as Minaj (she performed for Anna Wintour last week!), and no other rapper, period, with the exception of Kanye West, has shown such a penchant for innovation in high fashion. This can open lots of doors for more fusions between urban artists and high fashion, a connection that hasn't been made in the same way as it has for mainstream pop artists like Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, and Jessica Simpson. There has been a buzz about her famously curvy body in the spread and whether or not she's been airbrushed to appear thinner, but that's a discussion for a different day. For a (Pink) Friday, this is just Happy.
