Thursday Style Icon: Audrey Tatou as Coco Chanel

Coco Before Chanel

French actress Audrey Tatou shone as Coco Chanel in the 2009 film Coco Before Chanel, portraying Gabrielle Chanel before she took up the moniker of 'Coco.' The French biopic, which has grossed over $40 million worldwide, took a different approach than many that focused on the famous designer and chose to emphasize her early years in an orphanage and climb to fame (NOT rise, because here was a woman who worked hard instead of merely ascending to prominence).

Tatou was critically acclaimed for her 'unsentimental' portrayal of a notoriously unsentimental woman... one who could drink and smoke with the best of them, who wore sailor's shirts, and who worked every day, including Sunday. The movie ends right around the time Gabrielle becomes Coco, so there aren't any cameos from infamous double C's or quilted handbags. However, the exquisitely done depiction of early 20th century fashion and Chanel's personal no-frills style got the film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design- and that's why it's today's Thursday Style Icon.
