Mary Ann Summers, played by Dawn Wells, was the backbone of the Gilligan's Island survivors. Intelligent, pragmatic, and domestic, she caught the game, cooked the meals, and still managed to assist the Professor in his brilliant schemes to get off the island.
A country girl from a farm in Kansas, Mary Ann was an innocent, down-home character clearly modelled after Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. She departed on the tour in pigtails and a blue gingham dress, and spent most of the series in hot pants and crop tops fashioned from materials found on the boat and the island. The youngest on the island, her clothes represented her no-nonsense, girlish- yet still attractive nature.
Forming a close friendship with Ginger, Mary Ann was often the unwilling and practical participant in her schemes. Off-air, the question of 'Ginger or Mary Ann' became a pop culture phenomenon in it's own right, as a way of determining what kind of traits a person valued.
