Nerds have been cool since Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and officially got street cred with the huge popularity of Pharrell Williams N.E.R.D. and Lupe Fiasco. Kanye West post-808's And Heartbreak and Andre 3000 are also all examples of 'geek chic,' which also more prominent than ever on runways this season.
Carmen Marc Valvo's retro glam looks for Fall 2010 were smartly styled with glasses and tousled 'do's. The look that resulted was that of an uber-sexy secretary.
This look easily translates from the runway to the street. Big glasses instantly dorkify (to quote Harriet the Spy) an outfit, and a black horn-rimmed or tortoise shell pair goes with everything. Messy buns, argyle ANYTHING, and, of course, suspenders are also an easy way to add brainpower to a ensemble.
For a head-to-toe look, pair dresses and cigarette pants with oxfords, cardigans, and button-ups. The fit should be relaxed, and nothing can match too closely; it should be a mash-up of different patterns, almost like you got dressed in the dark. The beauty of this trend is in its eccentricity.
