Thursday Style Icon: Kate Winslet for St. John

'You don't have to be a size 2.' ~ Kate Winslet

Today's Thursday Style Icon is a little different than what you guys are used to. Curvaceous beauty Kate Winslet is no stranger to discussions about her weight and the use of Photoshop in magazine ads, so it's unsurprising that her most recent Spring campaign for label St. John doesn't feature the waifish Winslet that has brought scrutiny in the past. Instead choosing to highlight her (in)famous shape.

In a behind-the-scenes video, Winslet also reveals more of her opinion on weight and body image as it relates to high end brands, sounding particularly pleased about the label for which she is now brand ambassador:

“You don’t have to be a size 2, or even a size 4, to be able to wear these garments... They fall so well and are cut for women with a shape. And of course I love that,” she says. “That’s me all over.” She went on to add that her reception as ambassador has been “heartwarming,“ and that "a lot of women say they believe they could wear a particular dress or a pair of pants or a sweater because they have seen that I am able to wear those pieces. It is really important to be able to dress in clothes quickly that look effortless and feel comfortable.”

I picked Winslet as today's style icon for her remarks, especially the ones pertaining to her role as a template for other women. So many celebrities these days seem blissfully unaware of the influence they have on others, on everything from fashion choices to hair color, so it is most refreshing to see a starlet unabashedly proud of her size and ability to serve as inspiration for others. Most women aren't a size 2, and, unfortunately, most clothes aren't marketed towards them.

Kudos to Kate and St. John.
