Behold, a lady. ~ Andre 3000

I have a girlcrush, y'all. I first came across the name 'Shala Monroque' on a message board for a natural hair blog I visit and, upon Googling, was instantly smitten with the fearless, ladylike figure I encountered. Monroque is a freelance fashion writer and former Editor-at-Large for Pop Magazine, and the St. Lucian fashionista and socialite has become a well-known fixture on the international party circuit within the last few years. Named 'Girl of the Month' by Who What Wear Daily, she's often seen blogging about high-society events and is instantly recognizable for her eclectic and sophisticated style.

True to her reputation, she was all over the street style blogs this year, appearing outside of no less than ten fashion shows during the Spring/Summer 2011 season and at the high-profile Met Gala... unsurprising, considering she's dating mogul art dealer Larry Gagosian. Her fearless approach to fashion shows in all of her ensembles, which incorporate color, patterns, and bold fabric choices like velvet, satin, and cashmere. Although she lives in New York City, Monroque frequently travels the world and calls Miuccia Prada a close friend- she can often be seen in head-to-toe Prada when out and about.

Her smart and feminine aesthetic choices often include turbans, kitten heels, calf-length skirts, and cat-eye sunglasses. There's also something distinctly Parisian about her- the cut and fit of her garments evoke an Old World glamour not unlike Josephine Baker, especially when she presses her (natural!) hair into a sleek, gamine bob with short bangs. (Speaking of hair, y'all know I love me a hair chameleon, and Monroque has got to be up there with one of the best I've ever seen. Color, curls, straight hair, short hair, long braids- this woman does it all.) There's a distinct Caribbean flair in her dressing that I love as well, considering the fact that fashion tends to translate 'ethnic' into 'wild,' 'exotic,' and 'tribal,' not 'prim,' 'proper,' and 'ladylike.' For that alone, she's todays Thursday Style Icon... not to mention the fact that she's gorgeous.
