I think Dorothy had it right when she snatched those ruby slippers off the Wicked Witch of the East, as I am
head over heels in love with sequins at the moment. Anything sparkly catches my eye!

Sequins were all over the Spring 2010 runways, and the new take on sparkly things is that they can definitely be worn a few different ways. The key to the most modern version is to pair shine with subtler pieces for daytime. Phillip Lim did an amazing job in his Spring 2010 line- in the look here he paired a silver, sequined skirt with a neutral vest and shoes. Replace the metallic shell with a structured, black button-up blouse (I like the look of the tee that's peeking out) and top it off with a blazer or cardigan, and this could easily be worn to the office. The sequins should be the focal point of the look, and every, and I mean EVERY, other piece should remain understated so it's daytime appropriate. You should also probably stick to medium-length skirts, modestly cut tops, and minimal color... a red, short cocktail dress is a red, short cocktail dress, no matter what you wear it with.
The other way to go with sequins is balls out, 1970s-disco
bling. I'm talking
Balmain bling. I'm talking
Studio 54 bling.

And, naturally, this is my absolute FAVORITE way to wear sequins right now. Nothing screams 'LOOK AT ME!' like something sparkly, so why try to wear them in any incarnation other than that? If you don't have the stomach for the gutsy party dresses debuted by Balmain, Miu Miu, and Derek Lam this season, you could use the same logic for wearing daytime sequins and pick one piece to be the keystone of your ensemble. Sequined leggings have been floating around since the Fall 2009 season, and a pretty pair like these
Silence & Noise ones are an easy way to dress up tops and heels you might already own. Last, but not least, you can never go wrong with a sequined shirt, headband, or belt- every girl should have at least one of those in her closet for when the mood strikes to catch some light.
*Just beware of quality when searching for sparkle: loose threads, extreme sequin shedding, and stretchy fabrics that may lose their shape are big, red flags.
