Thursday Style Icon: Sherlock Holmes

I just realized- it's Friday! Which means I totally spaced and forgot to do a Thursday Style Icon yesterday. Sorry about that; I've been trying to move as well as working a TON this week and the day just got away from me. But, without further ado:

Robert Downey, Jr. was fantastically cast as the sardonic, neurotic Holmes in this past winters Sherlock Holmes. He managed to be dry, unconventionally intelligent, yet likeable at the same time, not unlike House's Dr. Gregory House (I had to throw a Hugh Laurie reference in there). Vanity Fair named his Holmes "fantastically eccentric."

But the costumes in Sherlock Holmes gave Downey, Jr. a run for his money. Outfitted in bowler hats, striped vests, and impecabbly tailored jackets, his screwball performance was definitely given a boost by a mishmash of clothes that, while fitting the 1800's time period, were still decidely modern.

Costumer Jenny Beavan, who has previously won an Academy Award for her work, dressed Holmes exactly as he was: an eccentric detective who steals odds and ends of things from his partner and has a penchant for setting them on fire.

He never appeared in a matching, complete suit, preffering to wear things he's thrown together with an effortless ease. Sherlock Holmes just has more important things to do than worry about if the pinstripes of his vest match the houndstooth of his pant. He's also just way too cool for that.
