Thursday Style Icon: Nancy Downs

Nancy Downs: "We are the weirdos, mister."

With 1996 came many epic films (and personal favorites of mine): Independence Day, Twister, and Mission: Impossible. But one of the most interesting looking characters came from teen thriller The Craft, about a clique of high school witches. That would be none other than Nancy Downs.

Bonnie, Sarah, Rochelle, and Nancy, as the outcasts of their private Catholic school, definitely took the pre-Gossip Girl route, dressing up their prep uniforms with unique accessories like rocker t-shirts, vests, and suspenders.

Of course, since it was the 90's, combat boots, oversized jackets, and plaid ruled. Nancy however, was the master of the goth grunge look, with granny boots, jet black hair and eyeliner, and as many long, elaborate necklaces as she could pile on. She also mixed in the shabby chic trademarks of bejeweled, pigtailed hair, dark lipstick, and nose ring. (She DID live in a trailer, after all.)

Nancy's look was pretty timeless and translates easily into 2010. She went insane over the course of the movie, and, ss the resident evil witch, basic black dresses were obviously her go-to. She almost never wore pants, and when she did they were cropped and tight, just like the slim-cut cigarette and cargo pants that went down the runways this season.

Nancy also wasn't afraid to mix it up, never meeting a maxi dress, studded choker, or mesh shirt she couldn't put to good use; maxi dresses with boots and cropped jackets and studded, chunky jewelry are also big this fall. If you want to try this look, just don't go overboard; one black item, crazy necklace, or raccoon eye is enough, instead of all at once. Nancy's style managed to be gothic, quirky, and at the same time whimsical- black magic, indeed.

More of Nancy's looks:
