So I've been looking into taking some dance classes, and I came across these videos from Broadway Dance Center. Needless to say, these choreographers are amazing and I'm pretty sure this is my school of choice. But as I watched, I found myself thinking about all the new clothes I'd have to buy more than anything else.
There's always been a fashionable ease to dance gear, evidenced by the fact, even when they're not in class, dancers can usually be still be spotted in oversize t-shirts and tights. This is a look of extremes: cut-off sweats and tops, extra-long shirts, and as many layers as you can handle. And it can easily go from athletic to sexed up, a la The Pussycat Dolls.
Laurieann Gibson, of Making the Band, rocks anything from combat boots to heels with basketball shorts in her classes. And Luam, a choreographer with BDC, has her own line, Love Understands All Music (LUAM) by Wildchild Nation, which produces shirts, hoodies, and pants.
The key to pulling it off without looking like an extra from Flashdance is not to wear head-to-toe Danskins.

Layer lightweight tank tops in neon colors, and throw them on with shorts and bright sneakers. The result will be a cool, casual look perfect for a summer stroll through the city. For a dressy yet comfy spin, go with a leotard under a skirt or harem pants with metallic heels; the low back and tight fit of the leotard makes it perfect for a club or party.
