Despite the utterly disastrous weather we've been having in NYC lately (rainy one day, snowy the next, then 70 degrees by the end of the week), I look forward to the spring with bated breath. And one of my absolute FAVORITE Spring 2010 trends has got to be ethnic prints. Both Catherine Malandrino (see right) and Marc by Marc Jacobs (see below) featured the global inspiration in their Spring lines, with a hodpodge of varying prints on both tops and bottoms.
This may seem a little scary to a girl that's never worn a print in her life, let alone an African print redone in neon green. But that's the beauty of this trend. The pops of color keep the prints from looking too traditional- or like you just walked out of a Ghanian flea market on 14th Street. More conventional patterns like stripes and polka dots paired with this trend also keep the whole ensemble modern and fresh. Not quite sure if the pattern versus pattern look is for you? You can keep it simple, a la Arlenis Sosa, and tone it down by wearing one bold piece with understated accessories and a simple jacket:This makes such a strong look a little more user friendly, because the idea is to look like you own the jungle, not like you escaped from one. So make Batik and Itak your favorite new words this season; it's going to be a wild ride...
